Grillitsch misses out on quarter-final berth

The round of 16 ties at EURO 2024 are over. Only Oliver Baumann and Maximilian Beier have reached the quarter-finals. Florian Grillitsch narrowly missed out with Austria.

There was another huge opportunity for Austria to equalise in the final minute of stoppage time, but Turkish goalkeeper Mert Günok made a sensational one-handed save to keep out Christoph Baumgartner's head and seal a 2-1 victory for Türkiye against Austria.

The defeat means that EURO 2024 is over for Florian Grillitsch. The TSG player was substituted on in the 64th minute with the score at 2-0 and was charged with initiating the comeback. Austria immediately cut the deficit to 2-1 with Grillitsch on the pitch but the equaliser would not come.

That means the Germany duo of Oliver Baumann and Maximilian Beier are the only TSG Hoffenheim players in the quarter-final. The DFB XI will face Spain on Friday. Wout Weghorst, still a Hoffenheim player until 30 June, also reached the last eight with the Netherlands. Now the Oranje will face Türkiye.
