Weghorst: "I'm looking forward to playing in our stadium"

Wout Weghorst will be competing for the first time in the TSG Hoffenheim jersey at the PreZero Arena on Saturday (15:30 CET, live updates on tsg-hoffenheim.de). The fact that he is playing against his former club VfL Wolfsburg makes his home debut even more special for the Dutchman. Before the match against the team from Lower Saxony, the 31-year-old spoke about the match in Heidenheim, the opposition and his upcoming home debut.

Wout, last weekend you celebrated your Bundesliga debut for TSG Hoffenheim. What was it like to wear the TSG shirt in that emotional 3-2 win in Heidenheim?

"It was a really good feeling. It's nice to be back in the Bundesliga. And because we got the win late on, it was a good day in the end too."

Up until the 77th minute, you were still 2-0 down, but were able to turn the game around. Did that take a lot out of you?

"Regardless of the opponent, we didn't play a good game. That cannot be good enough for us. The substitutes did very well. They came on with a lot of energy and gave us fresh impetus. But we still had something left at the end of the game and therefore we were able to take all the three points home with us. The important thing was that we got the right result."

On Saturday, you will celebrate your home debut for TSG – against your former club, VfL Wolfsburg. Are you looking forward to it?

"I would have liked to have already played my first home match against Freiburg, but I could not play because of a minor injury. So I am all the more pleased to finally play in our stadium and in front of the fans in the Südkurve. The fact that it is against my ex-club Wolfsburg makes it even more special for me. I'm really looking forward to it, and I want the next three points!"

Are you still in touch with any former teammates from Wolfsburg?

"I am still in touch with some of the players and staff. For example, I often message Yannick Gerhardt, Maxi Arnold and sporting director Marcel Schäfer. I'm looking forward to seeing plenty of familiar faces and will give them a hug after the game."

VfL have started the season very well with two wins. Has that surprised you?

"No, they have a very good squad. Their new signings this summer are very strong. I was not surprised that they won against Heidenheim and Cologne. It is now up to us to inflict their first defeat on them."
