Finally arrived

Bruma was once considered a surefire bet as a hot prospect for the future before his career stalled. In Braga, however, the 30-year-old has finally found his stride. In the game with TSG Hoffenheim (Thursday, 21:00 CEST, live updates on tsg-hoffenheim.de), the forward will come face to face with part of his past.

2017 was supposed to be his year. After a strong season in the colours of Galatasaray, Bruma moved to Germany's RB Leipzig. He was rewarded with a five-year contract with the side from Saxony. At the time, RB sporting director Ralf Rangnick, who also demonstrated his sense of talent in Hoffenheim, said: "We're glad to have acquired a player with such talent."

Just two years later, the hype about the attacker had vanished. After playing a lot of minutes in his first season, his game time in the second year was reduced. A switch to PSV Eindhoven followed, but the Dutch side went on to loan him the Portuguese starlet born in Guinea-Bissau first to Olympiakos, then to Fenerbahce. However, he was not happy there either. Only a move back to Portugal, where his career began, brought about a revival of Bruma's career. Since January 2023, he has been playing for Braga, scoring 42 goals in 79 competitive matches – Bruma's best return at any club.

A total of nine clubs are part of Bruma's professional life – the 30-year-old has felt little continuity over the past eleven years. This season – though not always in the starting eleven – the Portuguese striker is delivering, bagging seven goals and seven assists from his 20 competitive appearances. In the Europa League, he has already scored two goals – the only win for Braga to date against Maccabi Tel Aviv. However, he still owes TSG Hoffenheim one: during his time in Leipzig, he played twice against Hoffenheim – losing 4-0 and 5-2. Bruma did not lose all his games against any other club in Germany.
