Over 100 displays of total commitment: Benni Hübner's time at TSG
The first appearance
It all started on 1 October 2016, when Benjamin Hübner made his competitive debut in a TSG shirt – against his previous club FC Ingolstadt of all teams. Playing alongside many team-mates who are still with TSG or have since returned, Hübner and Hoffenheim recorded a 2-1 victory. TSG were unbeaten in each of the centre-back's first 12 Bundesliga appearances.
The first goal
Hübner scored his first TSG goal in the DFB-Pokal in October 2016. The defender fired TSG into the lead in a game that ultimately ended in a 2-1 defeat against 1. FC Cologne after extra-time. One of many important headed goals.
Inflicting defeat upon dad
In the final phase of his first season at TSG, the club were in with a chance of qualifying for a European competition for the first time ever. That made the 1-0 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt on Matchday 31 very important, with Hübner heading home in the final minute to secure a 1-0 win against the Eagles – the club where his father Bruno was working as sporting director at the time.
Hübi & TSG on the international stage
Hübner was also on the pitch for one of the biggest matches in the club's history to date. Hübner played in both legs of the Champions League qualifying tie against Liverpool and experienced the wonderful atmosphere on the pitch.
First appearance as captain
In September 2017, Hübner captained TSG onto the pitch for the first time. It was a successful debut with the armband, as Hoffenheim beat FC Bayern 2-0. It was only their second-ever victory against the record champions.
Opening goal scorer in first European win
Even as a central defender, Benjamin Hübner has frequently been involved in goals and amassed 20 scorer points in 103 appearances – an impressive tally for a player in his position. On 19 October 2017, Hübi headed home the opener against Istanbul Basaksehir and in doing so paved the way for the club's first-ever victory in a European competition.
Captain in the Champions League
A special moment after a length injury lay-off: Benjamin Hübner wore the TSG Hoffenheim captain's armband against Manchester City at Etihad Stadium in December 2018. He was fouled in the penalty area on the quarter-hour mark, with Kramarić converting the subsequent spot-kick.
Late charge for Europe
In a 2019/20 campaign disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, TSG were in desperate need of points at the end of June in order to qualify for the Europa League. Thanks to three victories from the final three games, including the 4-0 triumph in Dortmund on the last day of the season, TSG made it in the end – with Hübner as captain.
The last goal
The TSG fans celebrated a Hübner goal for the last time in February 2022. The central defender headed home the opener in a 2-0 victory against Arminia Bielefeld.
The last game
Following a difficult season overshadowed by numerous different injuries, it initially seemed as though Hübner would be fully involved for the 2022/23 season. He completed the full pre-season, was confirmed as captain by new coach André Breitenreiter and was firmly factored into the plans. However, he had to be substituted in the 85th minute of the DFB-Pokal match in Rödinghausen – in what turned out to be his final appearance in the TSG shirt.
Benni, a big thank-you for your more than six years at TSG Hoffenheim, for your commitment and for your fighting spirit in the face of many challenges.
