TSG suffer narrow loss to Schalke

Hoffenheim went down to defeat on matchday 23 with a 2-1 loss away in Gelsenkirchen. Thilo Kehrer and Breel Embolo gave the hosts a 2-0 first half advantage and despite Andrej Kramaric’s header after the break, TSG were unable to force a late point.

TEAM AND TACTICS:

Julian Nagelsmann made three changes from the side which beat Mainz 4-2 last week as Serge Gnabry, Dennis Geiger and Kevin Akpoguma were replaced in the XI by Pavel Kaderabek, Ermin Bicakcic and Mark Uth. The trio joined Oliver Baumann, Florian Grillitsch, Nico Schulz, Nadiem Amiri, Nejamin Hübner, Kevin Vogt, Adam Szalai and Andrej Kramaric in the starting line-up.

It meant TSG took to the field with Baumann in goal, behind Vogt, Hübner and Bicakcic in the back three, who backed up Kaderabek and Schulz on the flanks. Grillitsch started in the middle on his own, while Kramaric and Amiri added some bite to the attack formed by Szalai and Uth. Kaderabek and Schulz tracked back when TSG were in possession, while Hübner and Bicakcic looked to add with and Vogt an extra body up front on any ventures forward.

Nagelsmann’s first change came in the 52nd minute, as Steven Zuber came on for Nico Schulz, pushing Kaderabek to the left as the substitute took up position on the right wing. The second swap came six minutes later, when Robert Zulj came on for Bicakcic, as Nagelsmann looked to strengthen his team going forward even more. Nadiem Amiri was the last man to come off, giving Lukas Rupp 25 minutes of football, as Nagelsmann moved to 4-3-3 in an attempt to rescue the game. In doing so, Kramaric went up front, supported by Rupp and Zulj.

MOMENT OF THE MATCH:

Three minutes after the restart, linesman Robert Schröder was injured after falling badly on his ankle. He was quickly treated by doctors from both teams, but was unable to continue. Guido Kleve, who had started the game as fourth official, took Schröder’s place. The change caused a few minutes delay as Kleve had to be mic’d up to be able to communicate with referee Benjamin Brand.

NUMBERS OF THE DAY: 64 & 120:

Julian Nagelsmann’s team had 64% possession and covered 120km, showing a strong level of intent from TSG, even if their high effort levels did not bear fruit.
