TSG beat Verona in 2016/17 home debut

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim secured a 2-0 victory over Chievo Verona in the official 2016 season opener. Mark Uth and Sandro Wagner scored at either side of half time to give Julian Nagelsmann's side victory.

Line-up and tactics:

Manager Nagelsmann deployed a 4-3-3 formation with keeper Oliver Baumann guarded by Philipp Ochs, Benjamin Hübner, Ermin Bicakcic and Pavel Kaderabek. Sebastian Rudy and Pirmin Schwegler started in defensive midfield, with Lukas Rupp slightly further up the pitch. The three-man attacking line consisted of Marco Terrazzino, Mark Uth and Andrej Kramaric.

There were five changes at half time, as Sandro Wagner, Steven Zuber, Jonathan Schmid, Kevin Vogt and Eugen Polanski came on for Kramaric, Ochs, Kaderabek, Hübner and Rudy. Schwegler was forced off with a head wound shortly after the break and replaced by Kerem Demirbay. Fabian Schär and Nadiem Amiri were introduced on the hour mark for Bicakcic and Rupp. The final changes came nine minutes later, as Jin-Su Kim and Adam Szalai replaced Uth and Terrazzino.

Match reaction

Julian Nagelsmann: "We played against an opponent who makes life very difficult for you, but we dictated the play. Our main focus today was to control counterattacks and we achieved that bar one moment shortly before the break. We didn't execute everything perfectly going forward, but we still secured a deserved victory. We will place our focus on attack in the coming week. There were several passes which were played quite sloppily, but overall I'm still satisfied."
