Copa America: Chile & Vargas lose opener

Title defenders Chile, with TSG forward Eduardo Vargas in their starting XI, lost their opener at the Copa America in the United States. They were beaten 2-1 by Argentina, who were without the injured Lionel Messi, at the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.

With the teams level at 0-0 at the break, Angel Di Maria opened the scoring in the 54th minute. Ever Banega added a second just five minutes later. Chile pulled a goal back through José Pedro Fuenzalida in added time (90+3‘).

Chile’s next Group D fixture takes place during the night on Saturday. Eduardo Vargas and his teammates face Bolivia at the New England Patriots’ stadium (Foxbourough, Massachusetts). Bolivia lost their first game at the Copa America 2-1 to Panama. The top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals.
