Test-match victory in Walldorf
Following training sessions in the morning and one at midday, the Kraichgau club headed to Walldorf, where they participated in a pre-season friendly with FC Astoria. The first chance was created six minutes into the game, when Rudy's free-kick ended up with Vestergaard, but the centre back could not convert for the opener. TSG required another 15 minutes before taking the lead, when another Rudy set-piece found Schipplock, who set up Compper for the 1-0.
Hoffenheim took the one goal lead into the break and coach Babbel refrained from making any changes at half time, allowing the same players to stay on the pitch for the second interval. But it was the hosts that emerged from the changing rooms with more momentum. FC Astoria created two good chances before Schipplock doubled the score with a header following a Volland cross (63'). Both teams looked to play up the pitch now and chances were aplenty at both ends. Hoffenheim's new signing Takashi Usami added his name to the score-sheet with roughly ten minutes left on the clock. The Bundesliga side looked tired following the strenous training sessions in recent weeks, as goalscorer Compper confirmed after the final whistle: “Our legs were bit tired, but we didn't slip up and in the end recorded a deserved win.”
