Reducing CO2 emissions together: the DFL launches carpooling portal

The DFL (German Football League) have launched a carpooling portal for all Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 matches. At bundesliga-mitfahrportal.de, fans can search for or offer rides to their favourite club's home and away matches.

Bundesliga-mitfahrportal.de makes it possible to form carpools across Germany, thereby reducing individual travel costs and actively contributing to the reduction of CO₂ emissions. If you only want to use the carpool for part of the journey, you can combine the journey to and from the destination with public transport via the carpooling portal. Use of the portal is free of charge.

Marika Bernhard, Head of Sustainability at the DFL, emphasises the benefits of the new project: "Spectators’ journeys to and from matches cause around 60% of CO2 emissions on matchdays. Fan mobility is therefore one of the biggest topics with regard to environmental sustainability in football. With the carpooling portal, the DFL is taking a measure that supports more sustainable fan mobility at all stadium locations. And ideally, the journey is spent in good company."

The Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 was the first major professional football leagues to enshrine a mandatory sustainability policy in their licensing regulations in the 2023/24 season. For example, the clubs are required to provide evidence of an environmental strategy, which includes annual consumption measurements and a mobility and transport analysis. Many clubs, including TSG Hoffenheim, are already taking steps to make travelling to and from matches more environmentally friendly. These include tickets with combined local transport tickets, the provision of special trains and buses and the expansion of cycling infrastructure, including cycle paths and sheltered bicycle parking facilities.

The new service will also be integrated into the Bundesliga app. There are also plans to integrate the portal into the Bundesliga travel guide, an app and website for barrier-free stadium visits. The DFB also offers a carpooling platform at fanfahrt.dfb.de for away and home matches of the national teams, the DFB-Pokal or DFB leagues such as the 3. Liga and the Google Pixel Frauen-Bundesliga.

The carpooling portal has been realised by "Marktplatz Design und Software GmbH". Marktplatz GmbH has been offering a web-based carpooling centre for carpools since 2006 with its commuter portal. More than 300,000 journeys are posted on the portal every month.
