Baumann: "It makes me extremely proud"

Oliver Baumann made his debut for the DFB team on Monday evening. The TSG Hoffenheim goalkeeper secured the victory for Germany thanks to an outstanding save in the 90th minute. National team coach Julian Nagelsmann thought the 34-year-old had made a very good performance and gave the debutant an A grade. In a post-match interview, a visibly moved and emotional Baumann spoke about his "perfect" debut for the national team.

Oli, you've made your debut for the DFB team. First game, no goals conceded, a 1-0 victory against the Netherlands and top spot in the Nations League game prematurely in the bag. How did it feel to play with the Eagle on your chest?

"Neither the evening nor the match could have gone more perfectly. It is wonderful and makes me extremely proud to have played for our country. To be able to do that makes me very thankful. It is wonderful. I now need to let it sink in."

You had to wait for a very long time before you needed to do anything at all, what does that say about the team in front of you?

"The quality in this squad is brutal; we cleared a lot away in defence, were extremely comfortable on the ball and eager. It was really fun, everyone wants to defend until the end and you see that. It was super; if you win 1-0 here at home to Holland, then it was a top match."

Do you now have an appetite for more and want to be in goal in the next international window too?

"Let's leave that game be for now and whatever happens, happens."
