Baumgartner: "Let's build on December"

In the first half of the season, Christoph Baumgartner missed five competitive games through injury and a corona infection. Now the midfielder is fit again and raring to go ahead of the Bundesliga restart against FC Augsburg at the PreZero Arena on Saturday (15:30 CET). In an interview, the Austrian spoke about the winter break, Augsburg's strengths and the objectives this season.

You've just had a fortnight-long break. How good was it to be able to recharge your batteries?

"It did us good. It is very important both for the body but also for the mind that you switch off. It wasn't a long break, but we're delighted it's starting up again. The first training sessions have gone very well."

On Saturday, you're up against FC Augsburg. What kind of game are you expecting?

"Augsburg are always unpleasant. They'll play with a lot of passion. However, we have shown in December what we're capable of. We need to build on that. If we show our strengths on the pitch, we'll be the favourites. We therefore want to win too."

FCA picked up plenty of points towards the end of the first half-season and beat the likes of FC Bayern. How do you assess Augsburg?

"They're very dangerous when it comes to their switch-play and set-pieces. They have scored many goals this season as a result. We'll need to be on our guard. If we manage that, I'm confident that we'll keep the three points for ourselves."

You've already alluded to TSG's strong first half-season. What are your goals for the remainder of the campaign?

"In the final weeks before the break, we set ourselves up in a very good position. We have shown that we're capable of holding our own and that we want to compete at the top. If we are to do that, it will be very important to restart the season on a successful note."
