Hansi Flick calls up David Raum – TSG trio with the U21s
"Of course, it is every player's dream to be called up to the national team. It's an amazing feeling. I didn't expect the call to come, especially so soon. The fact that it has come, of course, makes me incredibly happy. I still can't really believe it," says Raum.
For the 23-year-old, it is his first call-up to the senior German national side. TSG's summer signing could celebrate his international debut in the three World Cup qualifiers in Liechtenstein (2 September, 20:45 CET), Armenia (5 September, 20:45 CET) and Iceland (8 September, 20:45 CET). The left-back would be TSG's tenth German international player, following in the footsteps of Marvin Compper, Tobias Weis, Andreas Beck, Sebastian Rudy, Kevin Volland, Niklas Süle, Sandro Wagner, Kerem Demirbay and Nico Schulz. Oliver Baumann was also called up to the senior national squad last season, but was not used.
"David is a highly motivated player who has really developed rapidly over the past few months: Promotion with Fürth, the transfer to the Bundesliga, winning the European championship with the U21s, playing at the Olympics and now the call-up from Hansi Flick to the senior side. We are very happy for him and it as yet another confirmation that we had the right idea signing him a few months ago," said TSG sports director Alexander Rosen about the call-up.
Raum has so far completed two Bundesliga matches and one game in the DFB-Pokal for TSG. In the summer, the Nuremberg native won the U21s European Championship with the German team and then took part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Stiller, John and Philipp in the U21 national team
Three TSG players also have a special reason to celebrate today: The coach of the Germany U21s Stefan Kuntz is counting on Luca Philipp, Angelo Stiller and Marco John for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers against San Marino (3 September, 18:00 CET) and Latvia (7 September, 18:15 CET). For all three, it is their first call-up to the national team. Sporting director Alexander Rosen was clearly pleased after the announcement of the U21s squad: "The call-ups are further recognition of our outstanding work, integrating talented young players into the first team squad, trusting them and training them carefully. We are pleased for Luca, Angelo and Marco."
