Mixed bag of results for TSG stars

Sebastian Rudy, Kevin Volland, Adam Szalai, Philipp Ochs, Benedikt Gimber and Johannes Bühler were all involved in internationals on Friday night.

Volland and Rudy started Germany’s qualifier against Poland on the bench. The hosts raced out of the traps and were 2-0 up after 20 minutes thanks to goals from Bayern duo Thomas Müller and Mario Götze. Their teammate at club level, Robert Lewandwoski, got one back for Poland shortly before the break.

It was a real end-to-end game after the break and both sides hit the woodwork. Poland came close to equalising but Götze got his second of the night to make it 3-1 with eight minutes to play. Rudy and Volland were unused substitutes.

The win saw Germany overtake Poland at the top of Group D.

SZALAI AND HUNGARY DRAW

Hungary played out a goalless draw with Romania in a game which had important ramifications on the qualification race. Hungary are third in the table with 12 points, four behind leaders Northern Ireland and three off Romania. Adam Szalai played the full 90 minutes as the sides drew 0-0.

GIMBER AND OCHS GET FULL GAMES

The Germany U19s lost 3-2 to their English counterparts on Friday. Gimber started in central defence and was flanked on the right side by Bühler, but he picked up an injury early on and left the field of play after just six minutes. Philipp Ochs played an attacking role.

Liverpool’s Sheyi Ojo gave England a 1-0 lead after 36 minutes and the scoreline remained unaltered until after the break.

England were reduced to ten men almost immediately after the interval when Jonjoe Kenny saw red for a foul inside the box. Stuttgart’s Prince Osei Owusu levelled from the spot.

Despite having a numerical disadvantage, England found themselves 3-1 up eight minutes later thanks to goals from Dominic Solanke (Chelsea) and Ainsley Maitland Niles (Ipswich Town). The DFB Team got one back with 12 to go thanks to Bayer Leverkusen’s Benjamin Henrichs. Gimber and Ochs completed the game.
