Ilzer: "The basis has to work"

After Tottenham is before Frankfurt: TSG Hoffenheim will host league rivals Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday (15:30 CET/live ticker on tsg-hoffenheim.de). Head coach Christian Ilzer spoke at his pre-match press conference about the defeat to Tottenham, the upcoming Bundesliga opponents and the personnel situation.

Christian Ilzer on...

...the defeat against Tottenham: "We've realised that we need to be more stable in order to achieve the right results. We still lacked something in the one-on-one battles, but you could see that we can play really good football. We ruin a good game when we make such simple mistakes. It was too easy for our opponents."

...Eintracht Frankfurt: "They're doing a really good job. The team has come together very well, there have been some really good transfers. Frankfurt have enormous potential with a lot of speed, they are particularly dangerous in transitional play. We have to adapt to that. You can only praise the work being done in Frankfurt."

...the game on Sunday: "We have to score consistently, regardless of the opponent. We should mainly focus on our game. If we work together without the ball, we'll have good stability. The underlying basis worked in Kiel and we were efficient in front of goal. That must also work on Sunday. We're hoping for good support again and want to repay the fans. We will do everything we can to deliver our best possible performance on the pitch."

...the personnel situation: "Erencan Yardimci is fit again. Alexander Prass has a flu-like infection and is definitely out, while Haris Tabaković will also have to miss out. Dennis Geiger is suffering from rib problems. The squad is thin, but we will have a good line-up on the pitch. We hope that the injury list will be cleared."

...the many young players: "The young players are doing a great job, that's the TSG way. The squad is thin, so the young players have their chance. They are currently close to the team and train with us. Everyone works on themselves every day and wants to improve. David Mokwa has made very good use of his opportunities. He is a boy who is in the gym every evening. He has a good attitude for a professional career."

...the training content between matches: "We have our three-day rhythm. Today we worked through the Tottenham game. There are video sessions to prepare our team for Frankfurt. The training session was a regeneration unit, active recovery so to speak. We'll have a short, crisp session on Saturday to be ready for Sunday."

The opposition's form :

Eintracht Frankfurt have made a perfect start to the 2025 calendar year. Coach Dino Toppmöller's team have won all three Bundesliga matches and celebrated a 2-0 victory over Ferencvaros Budapest in the UEFA Europa League.

Head-to-head record:

This is the 32nd time the two clubs have met in the Bundesliga. The record so far favours Frankfurt with 13 wins, ten defeats and eight draws. Eintracht have won each of the last three encounters 3-1.
