Akpoguma: "We're in a relegation battle"

Here's what the players, coaches and management had to say after the 1-0 (1-0) loss to VfL Wolfsburg.

Oliver Baumann: "It wasn't enough today. I thought we were very nervous, unsure of ourselves, made a lot of bad passes in the first half, were really poor and allowed Wolfsburg to find their feet in the game. You could see in the second half what we wanted to do, we fought, but we weren't strong enough. It's not an easy situation, it's a big challenge. We are where we are, and somehow rightly so. You have to fight until things turn around. We accept the situation, it's a relegation battle, that's clear."

Alexander Prass: "We made a lot of simple mistakes right from the start, had a lot of inaccuracies and contaminated each other with mistakes. That makes it difficult to get into the game. I actually had Amoura in my sights at the corner before the opening goal, looked at the ball for a second too long, which I also misjudged, and then I let him get too far away. That simply shouldn't happen to me, I can only apologise for that. We did a bit better in the second half, but then of course we have to score goals. The fact is: I had the chance to do that. I didn't defend it at the back, I didn't finish it off at the front. That's clearly down to me, so I'm sorry for the lads. Now we just have to look from game to game, take every game as a new opportunity."

Kevin Akpoguma: "The first half was a nothing performance. We were very nervous with the ball, we lacked courage. We also found it very difficult against the ball and never got into our pressing game. We were chasing them after the goal we conceded. Things went a bit better after the break, but that's normal. Wolfsburg did the bare minimum defensively. We were a bit unlucky in the end, but the first half broke us. That's why we lost the game. We're in a relegation battle, that's a fact. I know the situation. We have to stand together now, that's what we're doing."

TSG managing director Andreas Schicker: "We gave anything but a good performance in the first half, we weren't aggressive enough with the ball and were too hesitant in possession. We then tried everything in the second half, the longer the game went on, the more courage we took and we also had the odd opportunity. It's a difficult situation that we have to overcome together. We realised that it wasn't going to be an easy year. We have to keep going together and I am absolutely convinced that we will get out of this."

Christian Ilzer: "Wolfsburg deserved to win, especially because of the first half. We can't be satisfied with that at all. It was little to nothing like what we had planned. We didn't do enough to try and take the lead. I didn't like a lot of aspects, too little aggression against the ball, for example. Things were much better after the break and we also had a great chance through Alexander Prass. We can't show the same face as we did in the first half, we can build on the commitment we showed in the second half."

Ralph Hasenhüttl (VfL Wolfsburg coach): "We're obviously very happy to have won. It was the first game in a long time in which we were showed more stability defensively. The first half was very good. The lads had the right energy right from the warm-up. We even had chances to score a second goal before the break. We defended very consistently and didn't concede much, but it's always tight when it's 1-0."
