TSG reach second round of the cup after penalty shootout

TSG Hoffenheim won 5-3 on penalties away to Würzburger Kickers in the first round of the DFB-Pokal (2-2/2-2/1-1/1-1). As was to be expected before the game, TSG dominated the play as the higher-division team but fell behind to a goal from Enes Küc (11). However, Pellegrino Matarazzo's team did not allow themselves to be unsettled by that and levelled through an own goal following an Alexander Prass shot (18). The spectators also saw a committed second-half display from the Regionalliga outfit, who did not allow the Bundesliga club any chances whatsoever. With no winner after 90 minutes, the game went to extra-time and Moritz Hannemann put the hosts in front once again (100). But TSG did not give up and restored parity through Marius Bülter (107). The TSG takers then held their nerve in the penalty shootout and ensured their progression to the next round.

Line-up

Luca Philipp made his competitive debut in goal for TSG Hoffenheim, with Tim Drexler, Anton Stach and Kevin Akpoguma forming the defensive trio. Pavel Kadeřábek and Alexander Prass occupied the wide berths, with Grischa Prömel, Florian Grillitsch and Andrej Kramarić in the centre. Jacob Bruun Larsen and Marius Bülter formed the strike partnership.

Moment of the match

The goal for 2-2: Marius Bülter showed outstanding finesse for the equaliser, touching the ball over his own head with his back to goal and then shooting on the turn. A goal for every compilation video.

Number of the game: 5

Five penalty takers stepped up for TSG in the shootout – all of them converted their spot-kicks and thus ensured progression to the second round.

Cup comeback

After rupturing his cruciate ligament in November 2023, Mergim Berisha made his comeback in Würzburg. The striker scored in the shootout and helped his team go through in the process. Great to have you back, Mergim.

Outlook

The 2024/25 Bundesliga season begins next week. TSG Hoffenheim will welcome Bundesliga newcomers Holstein Kiel to the PreZero Arena on Saturday (15:30 CEST).
