Richards reinforces TSG defence
''Chris helped us out in the second half of last season and showed himself to be a strong-tackling and speedy defender who adapted to the team without any teething problems,'' said TSG director of football Alexander Rosen on the 1.88-metres tall American. In light of the still uncertain return of Benjamin Hübner and Ermin Bicakcic, who have both been sidelined with long-term injuries, the loan was considered "an important and valuable option at the centre-back position".
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, the US international moved from Major League Soccer club FC Dallas to Bayern Munich's youth set-up in the summer of 2018 and was part of the U23 squad coached by current TSG head coach Sebastian Hoeness. In the first-team squad led by head coach Hansi Flick, Richards made seven competitive appearances for Bayern in the Bundesliga, Champions League and DFL Supercup. Richards then joined TSG on loan and played in eleven Bundesliga and two Europa League games in the last second half of the season. This season, he has made one substitute appearance in the Bundesliga and one in the DFB-Pokal for Bayern.
