DFL boasts record ticket sales

The Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga are enjoying an uninterruptedly high level of spectator interest - in the first half of the current 2018/19 season, the total number of tickets sold by the 36 clubs in German professional football amounted to 9,418,148 - a new record for this time period. In the first half of the 2017/18 season, a total of 9,198,684 tickets were sold, which means that approximately 220,000 additional tickets have been sold so far this season, a 2.4 percent increase. The statistics are based on the number of tickets sold, including free tickets and complimentary tickets. This has been the chosen method of data collection since these figures were first surveyed and is also the method used for other leagues.

As is usually the case, developments in the individual figures for both divisions correlate with changes to the clubs contained within each as a result of both promotion and relegation. This explains why the overall figure for the Bundesliga has decreased by 2.8 percent compared to the previous season, with an average of 42,217 tickets sold per match. Despite this slight decrease, the Bundesliga remains by far the best-attended league in Europe. The 2. Bundesliga has witnessed a 15.9 percent rise compared to the previous season, with 19,339 tickets sold for each match.

At the end of the 2017/18 season, both Hamburger SV and 1. FC Cologne were relegated from the Bundesliga, with 1. FC Nuremberg and Fortuna Düsseldorf making their returns to the top tier of German football. Eintracht Braunschweig and 1. FC Kaiserslautern were both relegated from the 2. Bundesliga, with SC Paderborn 07 and 1. FC Magdeburg making the jump up from the third tier to replace them.
