TSG undone by Gladbach home strength

After enjoying a five-game unbeaten run, TSG experienced the taste of defeat again in their trip to Mönchengladbach. Julian Nagelsmann’s side were beaten 3-1 by home specialists Borussia on Sunday afternoon, with Andrej Kramaric netting Hoffenheim’s only goal of the game.

Tactics and line-up:

There was just one change to the starting line-up compared to last week’s win. Sebastian Rudy returned following his suspension, with Philipp Ochs dropping to the bench. So it was again a back line of Niklas Süle, Fabian Schär and Tobias Strobl in front of Oliver Baumann, Rudy and Eugen Polanski formed in the pivot, and Jeremy Toljan and Mark Uth were on the flanks. TSG started with a three-pronged attack in the form of Nadiem Amiri, Kevin Volland and Andrej Kramaric.

Nagelsmann waited until the hour mark to tinker with his side, withdrawing Polanski and introducing Pirmin Schwegler. Eduardo Vargas and Philipp Ochs also came on with 20 minutes to play, replacing Uth and Amiri in like-for-like changes.

Moment of the match:

Could or maybe should that have been a foul? Baumann can’t hold on to a shot, but it looked like he got to the loose ball before Hahn. The Borussia attacker kicked the arm of the TSG keeper, but the referee doesn’t call a foul. The result? Gladbach’s second goal. It’s hard to come back from that against a team very strong at home.

Number of the match: 5

Andrej Kramaric seems to feel at home in away games. Hoffenheim have scored at least one goal in every game since Julian Nagelsmann took over, and Kramaric has had a hand in a goal in each away match – he scored in Bremen, Stuttgart, Hamburg and Gladbach, and provided and assist in Frankfurt.
