Uth brace earns TSG three points!

Julian Nagelsmann’s home debut as manager produced TSG’s second victory at the WIRSOL Rhein-Neckar-Arena this season. Hoffenheim were 3-2 winners against in-form Mainz 05, with Nadiem Amiri’s strike and a Mark Uth brace enough for all three points.

Line-up and tactics:

The 28-year-old coach made two changes to the side that drew 1-1 in Bremen last week. Andrej Kramaric was missing from the squad following his sending-off, while Ermin Bicakcic dropped to the bench. That made room for Mark Uth and Pavel Kaderabek.

In the pouring Sinsheim rain, Oliver Baumann was between the sticks with a back four of Kaderabek, Fabian Schär, Niklas Süle and Philipp Ochs ahead of him. Nadiem Amiri, Tobias Strobl and Sebastian Rudy made up the three-man midfield, with Kevin Volland, Eduardo Vargas and Uth leading the line.

As usual, there was plenty of flexibility in the shape of the team, with often Vargas or Volland sitting in, Amiri pushing forward, or Strobl dropping between the centre backs. Nagelsmann introduced Jiloan Hamad and Eugen Polanski for Vargas and Amiri respectively in the second half, with the Polish midfielder and former Mainz man making his 100th competitive appearance for TSG.

Moment of the match:

Mark Uth’s goal to make it 3-1. In that moment, ecstasy took hold in the stadium, and the belief returned – belief in this team and belief in survival.

Number(s) of the match: 1, 2, 3
