Target reached: Volland celebrates Bundesliga debut

The clock in Borussia-Park, the home of Borussia Mönchengladbach, shows 15.31 CET. After a small delay, Gladbach strikers Mike Hanke and Luuk de Jong prepare themselves for kick-off. Referee Peter Sippel breathes in deeply and then blows his whistle. The first Bundesliga game of Kevin Volland's career has started. The 19 year old striker can instantly call himself a Bundesliga player.

90 minutes later though, Volland's excitement had been tarnished. His first game in Germany's top flight ended in a narrow defeat. “I'd love to have finished my first game with a successful result, but it's still a fantastic moment and I am sure in years to come, I'll be able to look back proudly”, said Volland.

Now that Volland has achieved his target of being a Bundesliga footballer, he can set himself new goals. The attacker born in Marktoberdorf is aware of the quality of the squad and remains reserved. “Every young footballer wants to play in the Bundesliga. That has always been my goal. I've achieved that. Now, it's down to me to push on. I will continue to work hard and give everything. The competition in the squad is huge.”
